5 Piece band calling themselves Polecat out of Bellingham, WA has been blending a variety of styles to create their unique sound for the past four years or so.  You can find yourself skipping around to grassy licks and the next moment bouncing to reggae influenced jams with these folks.  I have really enjoyed catching them play from time to time this year and recommend giving them a try.

I stumbled across this little gem the other day. The man is Darrell Scott; the song is "River Take Me". It's earnest and real, one of those perfect songs to listen to on the porch as the seasons change. With a beer in hand and good company surrounding it's hard not to enjoy.

Wild Rabbit out of Bellingham, WA grabbed my attention the other night so thought I would share.  They have quite the energy playing their folky stomp styles live and are currently kickstarting to raise money for their next album....that's pretty much all I know.

Cabinet is an east coast bluegrass band from Scranton, PA.  I think these guys have some interesting tunes and have enjoyed the majority of them.  They can bust out some real nice sounding solos, passing the torch around to let everyone get in on a piece of the celebration.  They have received some nice exposure in the last year (forming in 2006) and will most likely be pushing out more albums. Once again I can't help but post more Shakey Graves.  With his new album just over just horizon the wait is becoming unbearable.  To bide the time here is yet another single from the upcoming And The War Came due out October 7th.

I was recently listening to some Alabama Shakes and realized I do not have many women musicians in my music collection (compared to the other gender).  Also, I have not seen many of them live, Grace Potter being the most recent in 2013.  As I was emerged in Brittany Howard's vocals, I remembered the name Andrija Tokic.  He produced Boys & Girls for Alabama Shakes and also recorded an album for another band who has a female lead singer.  Andrija produced the album Look Out Mama for Hurray for the Riff Raff, which is a band based out of New Orleans.  Both of these bands are now with ATO Records, which is a great place to be.  

All this lead to the decision that I have a sexist music library and I feel I need to post some tunes by a few rock'n soulful women, so enjoy!

Man, this guy really needs to get an album together. His name is Shakey Graves, and he is due for big things. Here is his latest song plus another amazing rendition of "Roll the Bones". Is there anything he can't do?

  The London based band, Fanfarlo, has come out with a new album titled Let's Go Extinct.  This record was put out February 2014 and is their third full length studio release.  They formed in 2006 and are an indie folk/rock band that has put out their best album yet.  Some of the songs on the album almost sound a bit "Talking Headish" including Landlocked, which is here for your ears to do the deciding.  Check out the new material and let me know your thoughts!

The Shouting Matches are a side project by Bon Iver's Justin Vernon.  The band has enjoyed the success of their debut album Grownass Man, which has a very JJ Grey type bluesy feel to it.  Today however, I will post a song from their recently re-released EP Mouthoil.  In the true spirit of Valentines day "I Had a Real Good Lover" is some nice, depressingly beautiful, blues music. Be sure to check out Grownass Man as well.

Featuring Megafaun's Nick Sanborn and Mountain Man's Amelia Meath Sylvan Esso is an interesting collaboration of heavy electronic beats and Meath's signature vocals.  To date they have only officially released 2 tracks, both of which are excellent listens. Enjoy.

The UK based indie singer Daughter has finally dropped her debut full length album.  If there is one thing to be said about Daughter, it's that she has been consistently brilliant with her previous releases.  Here's hoping that If You Leave is a continuation of that hot streak. I think it's a safe bet.

The Last Bison continue to impress with the release of their newest effort Inheritance.  While doing some research on the album I stumbled across something pretty awesome.  I present to you The Last Bison's take on M83's "Midnight City". Enjoy! 

The Lonely Wild have done something pretty impressive with their first single off their soon to be released debut album.  Already the strength of "Buried in the Murder" has rocketed this previously unheard of band into the "what's hot on the streets" status.  The song starts of with a riff reminiscent of a spaghetti western then falls into a nice folk-pop pattern and begins to border cheesy.  It's after the three minute mark however, that everything comes together to create that sweet, fleeting feeling that makes listening to music so magical. Chesapeake based "folk-chestral" band The Last Bison has done a wonderful job with their debut album released last year.  Here is their first single from Quill titled "Switzerland". Keep up the good work guys.

The Oh Hellos are an absolutely amazing brother/sister folk band hailing from Texas.  Their sound is somewhere around Mumford & Sons with a splash of The Head and The Heart.  How The Oh Hellos have not completely blown up yet is simply a matter of timing.  Released just last month, their debut full length album, Through the Deep, Dark Valley, is a concept album with a warm sound and beautiful lyrics.  Best of all, the entire album is available over at Bandcamp on a name-your-price basis.  Get it while it lasts!

This one is for the ladies.  English folk singer Rosie May released her debut ep earlier this year called Too Far To Swim, and what beautiful voice she has.  Keep an eye on this one.  Enjoy!

 

We ran across this pleasant gentleman at the legendary Flora-Bama this summer.  He had a nice yet typical "bar band covers" thing going on as we walked in, but it was his original content that kept us there.  If you ever have the pleasure of seeing Albert Simpson live, be sure to request "Ding-Dong".  Here's his making of video for "Roll Your Mind".

 Bluegrass darlings Trampled By Turtles have released their long awaited 6th studio album, Stars And Satellites this month. The majority of Stars And Satellites, such as their first single: "Alone", is a tad slower and much more intimate than their previous releases.  Although TBT gained a lot of their following from their "speed-grass" style, the newer, more mature style they have given us suits them just as well.  Overall Stars and Satellites is an earnest and powerfully romantic album, and while it may not be their best, TBT is continually pushing the boundaries of pop bluegrass as they continue to hone their craft.  Check out the video for "Alone" below, as well as a nice free stream of Stars And Satellites further down.
