It could be said that I have a soft spot for really good songwriters, especially those ones who can make a song with brutally realistic yet whimsical lyrics.  Dad Rocks! falls right into that category.  Their single "Funployment" is one that tells of life and career choices in a light, humorous fashion that I think most people can  relate to. Not to mention they have an amazing band name. 

Caught A Ghost has a great retro/soul vibe going on. If they keep it up, you may be looking at the next breakout band in 2013. Check out the "Somehow" video below, and sign up for their mailing list for free downloads.

The Lonely Wild have done something pretty impressive with their first single off their soon to be released debut album.  Already the strength of "Buried in the Murder" has rocketed this previously unheard of band into the "what's hot on the streets" status.  The song starts of with a riff reminiscent of a spaghetti western then falls into a nice folk-pop pattern and begins to border cheesy.  It's after the three minute mark however, that everything comes together to create that sweet, fleeting feeling that makes listening to music so magical. Head over to their website for some free tracks including "Buried in the Murder" while waiting for The Sun As It Comes to debut on April 2nd.  

The Oh Hellos are an absolutely amazing brother/sister folk band hailing from Texas.  Their sound is somewhere around Mumford & Sons with a splash of The Head and The Heart.  How The Oh Hellos have not completely blown up yet is simply a matter of timing.  Released just last month, their debut full length album, Through the Deep, Dark Valley, is a concept album with a warm sound and beautiful lyrics.  Best of all, the entire album is available over at Bandcamp on a name-your-price basis.  Get it while it lasts!

  John Butler has decided to re-release "Ocean" as both a live video and a free mp3.  The new recording is still the beautiful instrumental track it has always been even as it has matured over the past decade plus. Here's what John Butler himself had to say about this amazing piece of music:

"OCEAN is a very interesting aspect of my life. It is part of my DNA. It conveys all things I can’t put into words.
Life, loss, love, spirit. As I evolve so too does ‘Ocean’. The song was first recorded as part of my first album/cassette,
“Searching For Heritage“, which I sold when I busked, then for my first self-titled studio album 12 years ago – “John Butler (1998)”.

 Hip-hop artist Nas has dropped another new track this week.  As expected, Nas delivers another solid effort with tight lyrics topped off with some smooth female vocals.   Get to it and grab the DL while it's still free!

Let's start things off right today with this awesome performance by Shakey Graves.  This Texas based (one man) band is the love child of Alejandro Rose-Garcia.  His first album Roll The Bones is available over at Bandcamp for free (or name your own price if you're feeling generous), so grab it while the getting is good!  Check out "Roll The Bones" preformed live at Trophy's Bar and Grill in Austin, Texas last year.  I dare you not to watch it twice.  

As we mentioned earlier Bonobo has released a remix collaboration of his Black Sands album.  If one mistake was made, it was not including Sound Medik's brilliant rendition "Kira".  On the other hand, perhaps it's the fans who lucked out, as Sound Medik is letting this awesome remix go as a free download.   Get it while the gettin's good!

 Here is a nice gem dug up by MusicNinja.  The song is "Little Man" by Little Dragon, which is beautifully remixed by Vindata.  The combination of Little Dragon's leading lady's sultry vocals, and the extra smooth electronica beats laid down by Vindata, make this one a definite keeper.  Have a listen below and don't forget to grab the FREE download!

Nashville electronic pioneers Cherub dropped their long awaited full length album last week.  As expected, Mom & Dad sounds like if Prince and MGMT had a sexy baby.  If the hype is true these guys put on an amazing live show and are emerging as one of Nashville's go-to "not country" local bands.  Best of all Cherub have been generous enough to let their album go for free (via thissongissick).  Give it a listen!

Do you remember your favorite park growing up? That place that was just so perfect that it was impossible not to have a magical time? Oddisee has given us an album about just that.  Rock Creek Park is about, you guessed it, Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC. In his own words:

"Rock creek park is & has always been one of my favorite places in Washington, DC. It has a way of aging with you & adapting to where you are in life. When I was younger, it was a place for skipping rocks, bike rides & imaginary adventures in the woods. As a teen it was a place where I played basket ball, had cook outs with friends & walked through with dates. As an adult it's my short cut through the city, my quickest way from Silver Spring to George Town. One thing it still is and always well be is my retreat.

Listening to the Black Byrd's "Rock Creek Park" inspired me to create an entire album around the park & my relationship with it. If the park were to have a soundtrack, what would it be? What does walking along the trails of the park sound like? What does driving on the narrow tree lined roads sound like? This album is my interpretation of Rock Creek Park through break beats, samples & live instrumentation. "

 The Earth is a Man is a Chicago based Instrumental rock band.  Their sound has been dubbed as some as "soft math" by being somewhere between progressive-rock and math-rock.  Their new self-titled album is available on a name-your-own-price basis over at Bandcamp.  I highly recommend checking it out. For your listening pleasure, I give a fresh stream of their entire album below.  Some great tracks by The Earth is a Man include "You Are The Motor" and "You Might Have A Mustache", but if you're feeling real frisky, there's always their collaboration with Tim Heidecker called "All the Tired Horses".  Yeah, that "All the Tired Horses".

 Aside from being hard at work in the studio and touring with Iron Maiden, prog rockers Coheed and Cambria have been nice enough to cut down the wait on their upcoming sixth studio album.  Today they are giving us a nice juicy taste of whats to come.  Front-man Claudio Sanchez gives us the deets:

Wildcat! Wildcat! is a collaboration of several longtime friends consisting of Jesse Taylor, Michael Wilson, and Jesse Carmichael.  Together they strive to provide "quality taste, sexy beats, and beautiful thoughtfulness in songwriting...", and they do a pretty damn good job.  Their first two singles have a sultry yet whimsical air to them.  Although similar to bands like Cherub and Passion Pit, Wildcat! Wildcat!firmly stands out from the crowd with a sound all their own.  Grab their new single "Mr. Quiche" over at Bandcamp for the FREE or take a listen below.  I recommend both.

 So what do Radiohead, Portishead, and a marching band have in common? The answer is Quakers.  Quakers is a massive hip-hop collective with over 30 members including the multi-instrumentalist behind Portishead: Geoff Barrow.  First appearing in Banksy's film Exit Through The Gift Shop, the group has finally readied a huge release for their huge project.  The self-titled double album will be available March 27th via Stones Throw Records, and boasts over 40 tracks! In the mean time, Quakers have dropped their first single on us and its a thick bitch.  "Fitta Happier" is heavy with brass taking on Radiohead's "The National Anthem" and Guilty Simpson and MED providing some fine lyricism.  Take a listen and grab the single over here.
