Artist Spotlight: Washed Out
Washed Out is the alias of the Atlanta, Ga songwriter/producer, Ernest Greene. Greene has been building a steadily rising reputation for himself for his warm, lo-fi, feel-good music. It's the kind of music that transports you someplace romantic and dreamy. Pitchfork's Mark Hogan hit the nail on the head when describing his sound as “romantic nostalgia and homespun textures,”. Washed Out's rise to fame began this January when IFC's Portlandia picked up the incredibly catchy, "Feel It All Around" (below) off his 2009 Ep, Life of Leisure, for their opening theme song. The critically acclaimed Ep is an absolute chillwave, synthpop masterpiece.
On July 12th Washed Out released his first full-length album: Within and Without. The album, keeping up with his previous releases, is a chilled-out, minimalist soundscape, perfect for an end of the summer road trip, or simply watching the green fade from the trees. Having acquired Within and Without the day it came out, I have now had a couple months to churn it over in my ears, and every time I do, they seem more pleased. Now Washed out has a full time band (as opposed to recording the entire album by himself, in his parents house, as he did with Life of Leisure) including his wife. They are currently on a massive tour in support of Cut Copy, and just released on official music video for their first single off Within and Without Check it out HERE.
